Satellite maps help officials in districts of Tamil Nadu and as well as Nellore

Nellore: The Indian microwave satellite, RISAT-1, and others mapped the damage caused by rains to crop and infrastructure during the recent deluge in Cuddalore, Kanche-epuram, Thiruvallur and Nagapattinam districts of Tamil Nadu as well as Nellore and Chittoor districts in Andhra Pradesh.
The satellite-derived maps showing the affected areas were disseminated to the departments concerned of the Central and State government ministries a few days ago.
Information related to the inundated areas was made available on the Bhuvan geo-spatial platform of the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the National Database for Emergency Management (NDEM) portal. The Decision Support Centre at the NSRC and ISRO monitored and mapped the event in near real time, using satellite data.
According to an ISRO press release, the first data was acquired on November 11 from the Microwave Remote Sensing Satellite RADARSAT-2 that showed the inundated areas near Chidambaram and Cuddalore districts.
This data was quickly analysed and the inundation layers were generated and published on the Bhuvan platform. It highlighted the affected areas, thereby helping the local administration take further action. These satellite-based value added maps were disseminated to the users within six hours of data acquisition.
Further, regular updates on the status of inundation were provided, using the satellite data acquired on November 14, 17, and 22. Such information captured what it had looked like "before" the flood and also highlighted new problem areas.
High resolution images from CARTOSAT-2 (1 m spatial resolution) on November 21 were further acquired over parts of Chennai. Specific information pertaining to residential areas such as Rajaratnam Colony, Chennai, and Munuswamy Nagar, Thiruvallur, were also provided to local authorities.
The Bhuvan platform has dedicated online information on all the major disasters that befell the country over the past few years. For example, severe floods in J&K and cyclone Hudhud in 2014, cyclone Phailin in 2013, floods in Uttarakhand in 2013, forest fires in Nagaland in 2015 and in Tirupati in 2014 and this year's earthquake in Nepal are some of the recent disasters highlighted on this platform.
