Nellore: Teams to assess floods damage
Nellore/Chittoor: Authorities in Nellore and Chittoor districts have been gearing up for the visit of a Central team on Wednesday to assess flood damage.
Heavy rains in November left a trail of destruction in both the districts and the fund-starved state government has been banking on Central assistance to restore roads, tanks and other elements of infrastructure.
A large number of tanks were breached, inundating villages and standing crops, in both districts. Aquaculture was the worst hit in SPSR Nellore district. The sector suffered loss to the extent of Rs 607 crore.
The entire infrastructure that aqua farmers had developed in their ponds was washed away. These can't even be revived immediately due to heavy sand silting inside the ponds.
In view of the Central team's visit, officials have identified for inspection of 30 visibly damaged areas pertaining to agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture, tanks and dwellings. The loss in Nellore district has been pegged at around Rs 2,468 crore.
Sources say that the team will visit Pellakur, Sullurpeta, Tada, Vakadu, Kota, Chillakur and Saidapuram mandals on Wednesday. The next day they will visit Nellore city, Venkatachalam, Manubolu, Nellore rural, Allur, Bogole, Jaladanki and Kondapuram mandals in Nellore district.
