German doctors learn magic of Ayurveda

More than 500 doctors practise ancient Indian medicine to treat diseases.
Hyderabad: Germans are increasingly showing an interest in Ayurveda. Many German allopathy doctors are trained in the ancient Indian medicine system and they offer their patients an option of natural cures. Speaking to DC, Prof. Martin Mittwede, director of European Academy of Ayurveda, Birstein, Germany who was in the city recently, said that there were around 500 allopathy doctors in Germany who offered healing through Ayurveda for diseases such as Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis and rheumatism. There are also around four-five government hospitals that have separate Ayurveda units.
Panchakarma, the ayurvedic method of detoxifying the body and mind by using various herbs and herbal oils is also grabbing the attention of Germans with about 30 Panchakarma centers operating in the country, where locals and in some places, experts from Kerala, conduct the therapy. Prof. Mittwede was in Hyderabad to attend a workshop at the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) on medicinal plants conducted by the German Academic Exchange Services, CCMB and Biodiversity Governance for Endemic and Threatened Medicinal Plants in India (BioGov).
Prof Mittwede said, “A lot of research is required to be done in Ayurveda which can provide life saving drugs at a lower cost than allopathy medicine. India and Germany can collaborate in this field.” However, even in Germany, China has an edge over India. Chinese traditional medicine and healing system has been in existence in Germany for longer than Ayurveda and hence is more popular among Germans. There are an estimated 30,000 acupressure practitioners in Germany.
