Azeez galli a popular hub for traders in Khammam
Khammam: Azeez Galli, a narrow commercial street in Khammam, is special to the people of Khammam. Shops here specialise in tailoring and clothing material, plastic goods, decorative items, electrical goods, toys and kitchen utensils that are not expensively priced.
K. Anuradha, a customer, said that she went to Azeez Galli every week to buy cloth for a shop she runs at Kaikondaigudem, Khammam. She said that the street full of shops was suitable for small-scale businesswomen as all the materials required were available at the one place.
Azeez Galli was named after Abdul Azeez Baig, a jagirdar in the 1940s. Small scale vendors would rely on the market for their livelihoods.
They would buy plastic containers, boxes and ribbons to sell in rural areas. About 350 such vendors come here to buy these goods.
N. Appa Rao, a plastic goods vendor, said that it is difficult for rural folk to come to the Galli and buy an item or two for their kitchens. “We take these goods to their homes and sell it. The customer is satisfied and we get to earn some money,” he said.
There is a chance that one is tempted to spend more than one actually needs to here. There is no parking available in the street and customers can only access it by foot.
Apart from plastic, cloth and tailoring material shops, the Galli also has several electrical goods stores stocking everything from electric wires to tube lights, LED bulbs and fans.
Electricians from 15 mandals use these shops regularly. About 90 per cent of the shops here are run by people from Rajasthan. They came here decades ago as small vendors, opening shops and selling a variety of goods. P Ram, who sells tailoring material for saris, said that they did brisk business with lower margins to attract customers.
