Methanol contamination suspected behind the deaths in Vijayawada
Hyderabad: Methanol (Methyl alcohol) stolen from unidentified sources was used to fill up bottles to make spurious liquor or methanol instead of Ethyl alcohol due to a manufacturing defect, may have resulted in the deaths in Vijayawada the preliminary investigation by police.
As a precautionary measure police have advised the Excise Department to recall the batch of Hayward and Officers Choice across the state to prevent further deaths if there is any manufacturing issue.
Police investigation so far found that the bar owners continued serving liquor despite people collapsing after one or two pegs thinking that they were falling unconscious due to the affect of liquor.
A top police official of AP said, “They drank four to five brands. While they consumed alcohol they felt a burning sensation in the throat and they collapsed immediately. ”
Timely shifting of victims to big hospitals saved many lives. DGP, J. V. Ramudu said, “Our Additional DG R. P. Takur was at the spot monitoring the shift to hospitals. City police commissioner was also on the spot.” Meanwhile it was found that Excise and Prohibition has no enforcement director.
