Majage proof is all Congress has
More evidence needed for moving against Upa Lokayukta Adi.
Bengaluru: Congress legislators, who had moved a motion in the State Legislative Assembly, seeking the removal of Upa Lokayukta Justice Subhash Adi, are said to be crucially dependent on documents in which retired Upa Lokayukta, S.B. Majage is said to have made charges against Mr Adi. Barring this, they reportedly have no other documents to nail Justice Adi.
For this reason, Legislative Assembly Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa had said that there was prima-facie involvement of Justice Adi in two cases but they required more documents to substantiate the allegations. According to Mr Thimmappa, he still needs at least a week to verify all documents again before submitting it to the chief justice of Karnataka High Court seeking a probe into the alleged omissions and commissions of Justice Adi.
The motion, signed by over 75 ruling party members, has been submitted to the Speaker seeking removal of Justice Adi. However, this move had been opposed by the opposition BJP in the Assembly, which terms it as 'vendetta' against the Upa Lokayukta and says this is aimed at closing down the anti-corruption institution. A few Congress legislators who were contacted by Deccan Chronicle claimed that they had given document to prove that Mr Adi had transgressed his jurisdiction allegedly to favour someone. They have reportedly given proof of Lokayukta Y Bhasker Rao ordering an inquiry into the placing of files pertaining to a Hubballi doctor before the Upa Lokayukta who allegedly recommended the closure of the case. Mr Rao had demanded action against seven clerical staff for the files fiasco. This, according to Congress legislators, was enough to prove that Justice Adi had crossed his jurisdiction to protect the lady doctor who happens to be a relative of the wife of Opposition Leader Jagadish Shettar.
Ruling party members have enclosed a copy of the letter reportedly written by Justice Majage about breach of jurisdiction by his fellow Upa Lokayukta. The legislators said that the Special Investigation Team headed by ADGP (Prisons) Kamal Pant had named Mr Bhaskar Rao's son and his friends as accused in connection with corruption in Lokayukta. Mr Rao could be only a witness and not an accused. In the case of Justice Adi, documents were available to prove he had reportedly committed a few mistakes. Besides, the Speaker's statement about the availability of documents to prove prima facie involvement of Justice Adi was sufficient for a probe by a panel of judges, they claimed.
