Kerala bride’s FB post calling off wedding after dowry demand goes viral
One young woman made a tough but brave decision after her fiancé’s family asked for dowry – she called off her wedding publicly on a Facebook post. A resident of Thrissur in Kerala, Remya Ramachandran explained in the post that her fiancé demanded for dowry right after they got engaged.
Although she wrote the post in Malayalam, the English translation of her post soon went viral. Here’s the English version of her announcement on the social networking website:
“Dear friends, I have an announcement to make to those of you who were anxious to know my wedding date. Till the engagement, the (groom's) family had maintained that all they needed was me, but immediately after, they started demanding 50 sovereigns of gold and 5 lakhs cash. As I am strictly against dowry and feel that buying a groom and a family who are not true to their words is not worth all this money, I have decided to call off my marriage. Thank you.”
She later received several congratulatory messages and also thanked the people who supported her. Below is a screenshot of her post:
