Google’s latest patent aims at ‘needle-free’ blood collection

The needle-free blood collection technology will be beneficial for diabetic patients.
Mumbai: Tech giant Google has filed a patent for a device that aims to draw blood without injecting any needle or syringe. The patented device can be used in two ways—a wearable on a person’s wrist or as a hand-held device that can draw blood.
The patent, which was published on December 3, depicts a device that can draw blood by sending ‘a surge of gas into a barrel containing micro-particle’ that can penetrate the skin. The process is followed by drawing blood utilising a negative pressure barrel mechanism.

According to Google, both the patented applications might be used to draw small amounts of blood for testing blood sugar levels or glucose testing. If the patented ‘needle-free blood drawing technology’ is developed, glucose testing for diabetic patients can become a lot easier.

Considering Google’s advancements and projects in the field of health, this development does not come as a surprise. However, it is rather hard to determine weather Google or Alphabet will be working on the project, as the patent was filed in 2014, when Google was not under Alphabet.

Although, Google has clearly pointed out that all their patents or ideas do not materialise, the needle-free blood-drawing technology can be really profitable for them.
