We will go down fighting: Temba Bavuma
Batsman said they will try to take the fight to the last ball and salvage a draw as the visitors put up 72/2 in 72 overs
New Delhi: South Africa opener Temba Bavuma said they will try to take the fight to the last ball and salvage a draw as the visitors put up 72/2 in 72 overs, in their pursuit of 481 on Day Four of the final Test here on Sunday.
Bavuma has impressed in his very first Test in India showing a lot of character in his scores of 22 and 34 here, and the 5’3” batsman – known as Sachin in the South Africa domestic circuit – has been the one to watch out for.
Excerpts:
On taking the fight to India: I wouldn’t say we rattled them, but we managed to sustain the pressure they put on us. I think in fairness, this wicket is a bit better than the other three. We’ve managed to hold them back, and hopefully tomorrow we can carry on doing the same.
On the probability of batting out the last day: It’s a tough ask, asking guys to bat 90 overs. It will be day five, so we except the track to deteriorate. But we have the experience and the skills.
Whatever happens, we will go down fighting. You see Hashim there, he’s laid down his mark. AB is also still there, we still have Faf du Plessis, Dane Vilas, so we will definitely carry on the spirit.
On South Africa’s plan to graft: We did sit down as a batting unit before the second innings, and came up the best way forward. This is how we are going to try and tackle the challenge going
forward.
On his experience: That was the toughest piece of batting I’ve ever had to do. I always try to be positive, looking to score. I was put in a situation where scoring runs wasn’t the priority, but the amount of time you batted out there was the key.
