Mysuru: “It was an unforgettable experience in my life. I had not seen a deluge like this” said, 24-year -old software engineer at Cognizant in Chennai, Sudheendra Gowda. Sudheendra who resided in Ramapuram in Chennai, has reached Mysuru safely after five days of hard toil when he was stuck in the floods. He is the only son of Gayathri and Vijayendra of Bilikere in Hunsur taluk of Mysuru district.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, he said, “I resided on the ground floor of a flat along with two friends. On Monday, as the rains intensified water started gushing into our flat. When the water level was a little low, we managed to shift our laptops and some of the vital documents to a flat on the first floor where a couple stayed. As the water level started rising, we requested them to allow us to stay in their place until the rain subsided, they understood our plight and permitted us. There was no mobile network, so I could not get in touch with my parents. We managed with the food we had for the first two days. Later we tried to go out to fetch food from the stores in the areas which were not flooded. We almost lost a friend on the way as he slipped into a manhole.
The stores were out of stocks of bread and other food items, we could get only biscuits. The rescue teams were focusing on the areas where the situation was worse. There was no drinking water.
When we tried to get the sealed bottles from our flat, we saw the fridge, washing machine and other things floating in the water. We ran out of candles too and we had to manage with a small lamp.
When the situation became a little better on Friday, we wanted to move to Bengaluru but we did not have money as we had spent it on food. Since we had debit cards, we had not kept much cash but no ATM was functioning. Once we reached the bus stop we convinced the conductor that once we reach a place where we could draw money from an ATM, we would give him the ticket money and he agreed,” he said. Asked if he plans to return, he said, “It was an experience that I can never forget in my life. There are 16 branches of our company in Chennai, some are not affected. The company has sent a message to some of us to start working in the branches which are not affected from Monday. My parents are now against me going back. But it is seven months since I have joined the company.
Since it is just a day since I have reached home, I am planning to take a week’s off, convince my parents and return. If I work there for a few more months I can complete the project which I have taken up. I am happy that I have reached home safely,” Sudheendra said.
