Hyderabad: An online fraudster pretending to be a US Army doctor cheated an MBA graduate from Hyderabad and looted nearly Rs 1.2 lakh from her. The accused who saw the victim's profile on a matrimonial site introduced himself as Daniel, a native of Kerala, proposed to marry her and asked her to deposit the amount for the treatment of his poor relative undergoing treatment in Bengaluru.
Police said the victim, 24, a resident of SR Nagar, had completed MBA from a city college. After completing studies her parents posted her profile on the online matrimonial site, Bharat Matrimony. A few days later, she got a message from a person who said he liked her profile.
Meanwhile, he said that one of his relatives was undergoing treatment at Bengaluru and requested her to transfer Rs 50,000 for his treatment, saying that he was busy treating soldiers. She deposited Rs 30,000 in the account number given by Daniel. The victim got suspicious and searched for his profile on the matrimonial site and was shocked to see that his profile was missing. She realised that she was cheated and lodged a complaint with the police. The police is investigating the case.
Daniel thanked her and told her that he wanted to send USD 15,000 and took her account details. Later, he told her that an advocate is needed to monitor the transfer and gave the advocate's phone number.
She contacted the advocate who asked her to deposit Rs 63,000 as his fees. She deposited the same in the account and Rs 7000 was transferred to her immediately which made her believe Daniel more.
"A few days later, Daniel called her saying that in the process of transferring money to her all his bank accounts were blocked and he will come to India and clear his accounts. He requested her to deposit another Rs 72,000 for his flight ticket to India. She again deposited Rs 30,000 in his account, said an official from cyber crimes.
After two days he called her saying that he had landed in New Delhi and his luggage had been seized by customs and that he needed Rs 3 lakh to get them released. She also got a call regarding the seizure from a person claiming to be a customs officer.
