Babri row: Bandh peaceful in old Hyderabad
Hyderabad: The 23rd anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition passed off peacefully in the city without any violence. Many Darsgah Jihad-o-Shahadath (DJS) activists were arrested while staging a protest demanding reconstruction of the Babri Masjid. Many shops remained closed in parts of the old city after a bandh call by the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen.
DJS activists came out with banners shouting slogans at Darus-shifa in Mirchowk. The police was already present at the spot. “We arrested all the activists as a preventive measure and kept them under detention till evening,” said an official from the south zone.
Senior police officials said there were no untoward incidents in the city during the day. Shopkeepers shut down establishments voluntarily. Earlier, city police commissioner Mahender Reddy had issued prohibitory orders banning public gatherings, speeches and similar events in the city.
The cops had also taken around 100 rowdy sheeters into custody and had warned them against getting involved in communal issues. Hundreds of cops were also deployed at sensitive areas to prevent violence. Apart from the city police, the Rapid Action Force and the Telangana State Special Police were also deployed across the city.
