4 children drown in lake at Chelpur

The police have registered a case of suspicious death

Warangal: Four youngsters aged below 14 drowned in a lake at Chelpur village in Ghanpur (Mulugu) mandal on Sunday. Ghanpur (M) sub-inspector P. Vijaya Kumar said that the deceased were Medipalli Ramana, 11, Kethiri Ramesh, 12, Kondapalli Shankar, 14 and Malloju Pradeep, 11, students of Ghanpur (M) ZPH School.

The four dived into Ora Cheuruvu, a lake situated on the outskirts of the village, even though they did not know how to swim and could not gauge the depth of the water.

Three other students, who also accompanied them, were sitting on the bund, opting not to swim, and when they noticed the four drowning, they raised an alarm. Some farmers rushed to the spot, but the four children died before they could be rescued.

The fathers of two students are farmers, the other two are daily wage labourers. The police have registered a case of suspicious death and are investigating. A post-mortem of the bodies was conducted at Mulugu government hospital.
