Karimnagar turns irrigation hub

Kaleshwaram project would be completed by the end of 2018
Karimnagar: Karimnagar district has become a hub of irrigation projects in Telangana, housing many large reservoirs across the Manair river, with barrages too proposed across the Godavari.
These projects will equip the district to play a vital role in the future growth of the state. Water from them will be able to irrigate several lakhs of acres of agricultural lands located in various districts of the state, besides quenching the thirst of Hyderabad’s residents.
The Lower Manair reservoir, situated on the outskirts of the city, currently provides drinking water to Karimnagar, Warangal, Siddipet, Sircilla and Vemulawada towns. It was constructed across the Manair river, a tributary of the Godavari, to have a storage capacity of 24 tmcft of water. Similarly, the mid Manair Reservoir and Sripada Sagar are reaching a stage of completion at Manwada village of Boinapalli mandal and Yellampalli in Ramagundam mandal respectively. They are being hailed as the lifelines of Telangana, which would be able to supply water to over 6 lakh acres of agricultural land in Karimangar, Warangal, Adilabad, Nizamabad and Medak districts. A total of 10 tmcft of water is already being drawn from Sripada Sagar to meet the drinking water needs of people living in the outermost circles of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.
The stage is also set for the construction of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project at Medigadda village of Mahadevapur mandal at an estimated cost of Rs 10,300 crore. This project consists of two more barrages to be built on the Godavari river at Annaram of Mahadevapur and Sundilla in Kamanpur mandal. Water from this project will be sent to Sripada Sagar.
Pranahita chief engineer B. Hari Ram said that the Kaleshwaram project would be completed by the end of 2018 as the state government was committed to ensuring that Telangana got sufficient water for irrigation and drinking. It would convey about 2 tmcft of water a day.
They were verifying proposals pertaining to the project, assembled by Wapcos, a Union government consultancy.
The Lower Manair Reservoir is the main source of drinking water for Karimnagar, Sircilla, Siddipet, Warangal and Vemulawada towns. It can store 24 tmcft of water.
