Water shortage hits Hyderabad varsities
Hyderabad: Water woes have hit Hyderabad universities and extracting groundwater is considered the only solution. At Osmania University the problem is an environmental one too as bore wells have dried up resulting in no water supply to Godavari hostel. Two borewells were dug about five months ago for the new Godavari hostel and sunk to a depth of about 800 feet. However, the borewells have already dried up.
The university has a sump which gets filled with water supplied by the government and this is supplied to the hostel. However, this is only just enough for the students who are sometimes forced to go to other hostels for using toilets. Other hostels in the university too suffer from water shortage sometimes, especially during summers.
To solve the issue three new borewells have been sanctioned by the university which are expected to be sunk to a depth of nearly 1,000 feet, indicating the severity of the groundwater crisis in Hyderabad. However, the issue may not be solved soon as the university does not have funds for these borewells.
OU was planning to use funds sanctioned by the Centre as per the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) but the funds have not been allocated to the university as it is yet to get NAAC accreditation.
Students at the University of Hyderabad too are facing water shortage as Manjeera water supply has stopped affecting students of A, B, C, D, H, NRS, NRS annex and ladies hostels and the university is now planning to tap groundwater. Students union president Zuhail K.P. said, “We spoke to the university administration about the water problem. They sanctioned two new borewells. Till they are ready we will have to make do with the existing borewells which do not supply enough water for all the hostels.”
