SET is cleared, but no job offer

PhD admissions too have taken a hit

Hyderabad: The State Eligibility Test (SET) has been conducted thrice, in 2012, 2013 and 2015, and more than 18,000 candidates qualified. Of them 6,432 qualified this year. However, the tests are proving to be a waste of money as the two main purposes for which SET is required, recruitment of teachers in universities and colleges and for applying for PhD in state universities, are not being done regularly.

Osmania University has not conducted a single recruitment drive for assistant professors since SET was conducted for the first time in 2012 even though there are about 250 positions vacant and around 160 positions are filled by contract employees. Few of the contract assistant professors have cleared the National Eligibility Test or SET which has been made a minimum requirement for teachers since 2012 for those without PhDs, or for pursuing PhD after 2009.

PhD admissions too have taken a hit since no admissions have taken place for those who have cleared SET in two years. Only candidates who have received some sort of fellowship from the central government are being allowed to apply in OU.

This year, even though the SET and PhD entrance test were conducted due to demands by students to reduce the cut-off marks set by the university, admissions could not take place as the matter is pending.
