Vijayawada city too under flood threat

The Centre had allotted Rs 1,000 crore for a storm water drain project.

Vijayawada: Vijayawada city could also suffer a fate similar to Chennai’s because of its poor drainage system. Areas like One Town, Singhnagar, Rajeevnagar and Kandrika did get submerged three years ago when it rained heavily and people found that they had to use boats in the streets of One Town.

If the city gets 300 mm of rain, this could turn into a Chennai-like situation, according to P. Sambasiva Rao, who retired from a local civic body recently.

The Centre had allotted Rs 1,000 crore for a storm water drain project. However, the state government failed to initiate steps.
