Bengaluru: Maid steals about 100 grams of gold recovered by the police in various cases

The incident reportedly took place in a station falling under the South Division.

Bengaluru: In a case of police themselves becoming victims of theft, a maid employed to clean a police station stole gold valuables recovered by the police in various crime cases, without their knowledge. However, she soon ran out of luck as she failed to outsmart the cops.

The incident reportedly took place in a station falling under the South Division. Police sources said that the incident took place recently and the woman was working in the police station as a cleaner from the last few years. “She used to come by 5 am. As not many policemen used to be present during that hour, she took advantage of it and took away the jewellery seized in various theft cases,” a source said.

It is learnt that the woman stole 2-3 times before she was caught. “Usually, inspectors and sub-inspectors used to leave the key of the almirahs on their table or would keep them in a locker. The woman somehow took the keys and committed the theft in the police station and kept the keys back in place. Before the staff could learn about the theft, she had done it 2-3 times. Recently, a staff found out that the seized gold items were missing. Based on suspicion, the woman was questioned and she confessed to have stolen close to 100 grams of gold jewellery,” the source said.

“She said that she was in need of money and thus stole the gold. She revealed that she had pledged the stolen gold jewels with a gold finance firm, and the same was recovered. The staff did not even inform their higher ups about the incident, fearing that they would be in soup, if the seniors find their negligence in the case. Thus, no case was booked against the woman, but she was left after a stern warning,” the source added.

When DC contacted Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), B.S. Lokesh Kumar, he said no such incident had taken place in his jurisdiction.
