Nun drowned, says post-mortem report

Thousands of people participated in the funeral function

Kottayam: While the police investigation into the unnatural death of Sister Liza Mariya, a nun with the St. Theresa’s convent at Uluppoony is still going on, the post-mortem conducted at the Kottayam medical college hospital suggests that she died due to drowning.

Peerumedu Circle Inspector P.V. Manoj Kumar, who is investigating the case, told Deccan Chronicle that the post-mortem suggests that the death occurred due to drowning and the investigation is still on.

“So far we haven’t received any evidences suggesting the death occurred due to any reasons other than drowning. The post-mortem too doesn’t refer to the presence of any foreign elements or any other extraneous reason behind the death. However, the investigation process is progressing and will verify all possibilities”, Mr Manoj Kumar added. He said he won’t be able to say much regarding the case as it will affect the merit of the case.

The internal organs of Sister Liza were sent for chemical examination at the forensic sciences laboratory at Thir-uvananthapuram.

Meanwhile, the funeral of Sister Liza Mariya was held at the St. Mary’s Forane Church, in Upp-uthura.

Thousands of people participated in the funeral function.

Sister Liza Mariya, 42, a nun sister with the St Theresa’s convent at Ulupoonny at Vagamon in Idukki district, coming under the Kanjirapally diocese was found dead in the well of the convent on Tuesday morning.


The death of Sister Liza had invited much attention across the state as the murder of Sister 69, of Lisieux convent at Pala on September 17th stirred the controversy. Later the police arrested Satheesh Babu, a native of Kasargod in connection with the murder of Sister Amala.
