Mauritanian President stops football game in 63rd minute for penalty shootout
Mumbai: Football is considered to be an extremely exciting sport and within a stipulated 90 minutes (with the addition of added time in both halves), more often, barring a draw, matches normally see a result.
However, recently during the Mauritanian Super Cup, the match ended in an usual fashion. The President of the country, who was invited for the match got bored of the action and ordered a penalty shoot-out in the 63rd minute.
President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz was reportedly frustrated with the pace of the game and, with FC Tevragh-Zeina and ACS Ksar locked at 1-1, called for an early result, according to a report in Italy's Gazetto World.
The sequence of events left thousands of crowds in the stands await an explanation despite league officials denying claims of the President’s involvement.
A statement was later issued by the federation present, Ahmed Ould Abderrahmane. "The decision was made due to organisational issues in accordance with the presidents and the coaches of the two teams," it read.
FC Tevragh Zeina went on to lift the trophy.
