Robust placement session at IIT-Madras

Heavy rains no deterrent for recruiting companies
Chennai: Notwithstanding heavy rains, job placement kicked off at IIT on Tuesday. The first session, also called ‘graveyard session’, started at 1 am and got over at 6 am The second session, called morning session started at 8 am and got over at 2pm.
Most of the companies turned up for day one placement despite heavy rain. The third session started at 3 pm in the afternoon and will continue till 11 pm.
“For the graveyard session we received about five offers and we expect to get another two or three. We are awaiting decisions from the headquarters of these companies in the US. The response was fantastic this year,” Babu Vishwanathan, Placement Advisor, said.
Prof. Vishwanathan said that packages are up to 1,25,000 US dollars per year. The startups have not given any pre-placement offers.
About 295 companies came for the first phase of placement.
Among these include Microsoft, Visa, Bloomberg and Oracle. For the morning session, 14 companies out of 18 companies turned up.
“The remaining four companies we were not able to reach but may come later. So far, none of the companies have cancelled because of rain,” he said. The placement will go on for 10 days.
Companies due to come for placement on Wednesday are on track. Other companies, which visited the institution for placement, include Cognizant, Citicorp, TVS Motors and Robert Bosch. Around 129 startups will be participating this year.
Startups, which have registered for placement, are Flipkart, Ola, Snapdeal, Swiggy’s Clean Max Solar, Wrig, Nano systems and Urban Ladder. The placement procedure was good, said a student who declined to be identified. “For me the interview and GD PI went well. The examination was a bit tough. I am awaiting the result,” he said.
