Mayor Soumini Jain checks out vet hospital

The city has nearly 20000 strays with their number increasing rapidly

Kochi: A civic team headed by Mayor Soumini Jain inspected the animal birth control programme and the functioning of the multi specialty veterinary hospital at Brahmapuram. The ABC unit, the first of its kind initiated by any civic body in the state, has already done sterilization of 1111 dogs including two rabies affected strays so far.

After reviewing the functioning of the ABC unit including 10 staff members, Mrs. Jain observed that the facility has already attained national attention. A proper and transparent data management and record keeping system with details of each stray is being maintained at the unit.

As the stray dog population in the city is high, the civic body has to scale up the programme to resolve the menace, feel the city residents.

The city has nearly 20000 strays with their number increasing rapidly. Mrs. Jain has earlier announced that one more sterilization unit will be set up at Brahmapuram if needed.

The previous corporation council has implemented the much-delayed ABC programme as part of the Mission Kochi initiative.

Meanwhile, the civic body will soon implement licensing and micro chipping system for pet dogs in an effort to curb the practice of abandoning aged pet dogs in streets.

The more than 12, 000 pet dogs within the city limits will be brought under the system and all the animals will be given anti rabies vaccination.

The owner would be provided with a license book where all the details about the owner and pet are included. The micro chipping will help to identify the dog and the details of its owner.
