Hyderabad: Cops focus on bylanes to catch drunk drivers

Violators take parallel route instead to avoid, say cops

Hyderabad: Playing the same game as the violators, the Hyderabad Traffic Police these days book more drunk driving cases on alternative routes instead of the main roads.

Traffic cops have shifted their checkpoints from main roads to internal roads. The bandobust is now on Road Number 19, 20 and 17 of Jubilee Hills and residential colonies in Marredpally and Vijaynagar Colony - Masab Tank.

North zone deputy commissioner of police (Traffic) L.S. Chouhan said, “Earlier the drive was regularly being conducted on Jubilee Hills road numbers 45 and 36, however, gradually violators started avoiding the main roads and started taking parallel routes. After shifting the base to road 19, 20 and 17, during every drive 20-25 cases are being booked. The number of cases are high at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan junction – Jubilee Hills road number 82, 14 and the Satya Sai Nigamam exhibition hall. We are also conducting surprise checks at residential colonies.”

During a special drive to check drunken driving during daytime (2 pm to 5 pm) on October 1 and 3, over 82 cases were registered, including drivers of two-wheelers, three-wheelers and cars.

“Commuters keep a track of regular checking areas and avoid those routes, they are even informed about where the checking is on Friday and Saturday. We began thinking like them…which route they would take in these scenarios, and planned the surprise checks. The idea is not to book cases and drag people to court or punish them, but to see that people respect the law and don’t take it for granted. The surprise checks are working well, there is a change in attitude as well. The aim is to bring down the number of accidents,” added the DCP.
