BJP in a fix over Vellappally’s yatra

BJP denies SNDP Yogam leader hijacked party’s agenda; LDF plans to sharpen attack on both

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With SNDP general secretary Vellapally Natesan exposing his “communal fangs” much ahead of the conclusion of his Samatwa Munneta Yatra, the BJP which was expecting the yathra to create a favourable atmosphere for positioning itself as a development oriented credible third alternative seems to be in a fix.

Though BJP has tried to put up a brave face, privately its leaders are wary of its impact on the moderate and secular sections among Hindus. They admitted that even BJP was cautious while reacting on such sensitive issues.

Has Vellapally pushed BJP’s development agenda aside by bringing in communal polarisation ? “There is no question of Vellapally hijacking our agenda. We stand for equal justice for all. At the moment only a particular section is enjoying fruits of development,” said K Surendran BJP state secretary.

But the LDF says BJP’s development agenda is a sham. Sangh Parivar is using Vellapally as a tool to execute its communal agenda.

“People are secular, they will see through their game. We are not going to compromise on Hindu or Muslim communalism. Kanthapuram Abubacker Musaliyar’s views on women reflect Manu Smriti, ” said CPI leader Pannyan Raveendran.

Large sections of Malayalis have given thumbs up for Left’s unwavering stand on communalism which was also evident from local bodies poll verdict.

“There is no need to get carried away by crowds at Vellapally’s show. RSS is putting its might behind Vellapally, packing venues with its activists. The presence of actual SNDP members is low,” said Pannyan.

Dr J Prabhash director, school of social sciences, said that the present atmosphere is favourable for LDF in many ways.
