Adyar school functions despite collector’s order

Parents, local residents upset, threaten legal action
Chennai: A private school in Adyar functioned on Tuesday ignoring the Chennai district collector order declaring leave due to heavy rains. Agitated parents and local residents threatened legal action against the posh school that collects fine from absent students.
“Most of the students come in cars and during monsoon the entire Padmanabha Nagar and parts of Adyar chokes due to water logging. Despite representation from public and civic welfare association, the Sishya school management hardly reacts,” said an agitated K. Vidhya, who resides opposite the posh school.
Local residents are left without a solution and if this persists, the only option is to approach the court seeking solution, she added. A visit by this newspaper to the Sishya school in Padmanabha Nagar during deluge revealed that the school has been periodically conducting classes over the past few days irrespective of the state declaring holidays.
Several parents requesting anonymity poured their grievances to Deccan Chronicle and shared WhatsApp videos with their children walking in knee deep water. The parents noted that their plea to school management insisting rain holidays went futile.
The school staff not only prevented access to this newspaper but also refused to comment saying that the administrators were not available. The staff maintained that due to rains kindergarten and lower classes were closed on Tuesday, but had no answer on school functioning despite collector’s order. Phone calls to the school management remained unanswered.
When contacted the office of Chennai district collector E. Sundaravalli, an informed official said the collector had already received a complaint and directed the education officer to investigate. City education officer, A. Anitha, maintained that the school was inspected and forced to close down on Tuesday. The authorities maintained ignorance over collector’s order and assured that in future they will abide by government order, the official added.
