Trend of female centric films in Bollywood is encouraging: Madhureeta Anand

‘Kajarya’ explores the issue of female foeticide releasing this friday
Madhureeta Anand turned director with Mere Khwabon Mei Jo Aaye in 2009, she is back with her second feature film, ‘Kajarya’, which explores the issue of female foeticide, is set for its theatrical release in India on December 4th 2015. In a chat with DC, Madhureeta talks about her challenges while making ‘Kajarya’ and more.
Why did you choose such an intense subject for ‘Kajarya’ post debuting with the romantic film?
I had written ‘Kajarya’ before ‘Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye’ but people told me to stick to the commercial cinema. This sensitive issue has affected me a lot back then so I was always keen to make the film. As a filmmaker, I want to keep doing something different. I want to explore different aspects of filmmaking. Both the films, which I directed, were satisfying.
What was the reason of shooting the entire film on digital camera?
The film required to shoot at the real locations hence we avoided the huge and heavy cameras. Few scenes required shooting with multiple cameras so we did it with 5D cameras.
How did you cast Meenu Hooda for the lead?
I affirmed my casting director that I need trained actors from Haryana. Meenu is married and a FTII acting graduate. Meenu understood the story very well. She did a brilliant job in the film.
Do you think Bollywood has slightly become women oriented?
Yes of course, female centric films in Bollywood are encouraging. It is an excellent trend.
Do you think female directors are still not commercially viable at the box office?
Mira Nair makes international film, whereas Zoya Akhtar makes Indian films. Commercial films require big budget, big stars and certainly they have date issues. It is just the matter of time. The trend is changing slowly.
