Volvo to launch hybrid buses in India next year
Mumbai: Volvo will be the first bus manufacturer to roll out hybrid buses in India. The hybrid buses will be introduced as part of a pilot project in Navi Mumbai and its surrounding areas.
The adoption of the new hybrid buses has been triggered by the Indian Government’s recently launched Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles (FAME) scheme.
The buses will be running under the banner of Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) and will be manufactured at Volvo’s factory in Bangalore. Volvo already operates in 34 India cities with an existing fleet of 1,500 traditional buses.
The company pointed out that it has sold around 2,300 hybrid buses in more than 20 countries, including Sweden, where the company is based. Vovlo also claims that the hybrid variants will lower fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions significantly in comparison to regular diesel-run buses.
