Spanish police find eight skulls, bones off north eastern beach

The beach is popular with bathers, divers and snorkelers

Madrid: Spanish police say they have found eight apparently human skulls, and other bones, in shallow waters just off a popular north eastern beach.

A Catalonia regional police spokeswoman said the bones were found half-buried some three meters (10 feet) out from Els Palangrers beach, close to the town of Roses, north of Barcelona.

She said a local snorkeler had discovered the bones on Sunday and notified police. The officer said police are investigating the identity of the bones, how old they are and how they came to be there. She said the bones are clean and have no body tissue attached.

The beach is popular with bathers, divers and snorkelers.

The officer spoke today on condition of anonymity in keeping with police regulations.
