CHITTOOR: Srirama Chandrasekhar, alias Chintu, the prime accused in the sensational double murder case in which Nellore Mayor K. Anuradha and her husband K. Mohan were killed on November 17, on Monday surrendered before the IV additional junior civil judge here. Judge S. Yugandhar sent Chintu to 14 days remand. He was shifted to Kadapa central jail till December 13 due to security reasons.
According to SP G. Srinivas, Chintu reached the court complex alone in an auto rickshaw and gave himself up. According to eyewitnesses, he handed over some documents to the judge at the time of his surrender.
As soon as the news regarding Chintu’s surrender spread, about 300 armed police personnel surrounded the court premises to ensure that the situation does not get out of hand.
After the judge sent Chintu to remand, the top cops instructed the SHOs of all police stations on the route to the Kadapa central jail to keep the road clear of traffic while Chintu was being shifted to the jail.
Meanwhile, relatives of the slain couple, including son Praveen, two daughters, sons-in-law, along with a sizeable number of TD activists staged a protest in front of the court premises, demanding that Chintu be given the death penalty.
Later, the protesters went in a rally from the court premises to the Gandhi statue and resorted to a road blockade.
Fearing that the situation may turn volatile, all shops in the town downed their shutters.
