Telangana beer makers may get nod to dig wells
Hyderabad: The Telangana government is set to relax the provisions of the Water, Air, Land and Trees Act in Sangareddy on the city outskirts to avert a shortage of beer in the state. This will allow the four functional breweries to dig borewells and use water to produce beer.
Commercialisation of borewell water is not allowed under the WALTA Act. The government, which supplies Singur water to the four breweries, decided to stop supply from December 1 to meet drinking water needs of the people.
Excise officials told the government that if production is stopped, Telangana will face a severe shortage of beer from January. Telangana has six breweries, all located in Sangareddy, of which four are functional. These four breweries use 44 lakh litres of water per day to produce 1.35 lakh 12-bottle cases of beer.
