Amma’s gift boxes getting popular in Vellore

Government hospitals in Tiruppathur stand first to distribute a total of 600 gift boxes to mothers
Vellore: Free distribution of mother-baby gift boxes, popularly called 'Amma Gift Box', containing 16 various ingredients for mothers who deliver babies in government hospitals have become popular and gaining momentum among women-folk in Vellore district.
According to latest official figures, around 9,446 mothers who delivered babies received the gift-boxes at government hospitals where they had delivered babies. The numbers included the distribution of 4,382 boxes to mothers who had delivered babies, from the 78 government hospitals earlier. The distribution of 'Amma Gift Boxes' began on September 11 last in the district.
The government hospitals in Tiruppathur stand first to distribute a total of 600 gift boxes to mothers. Next comes Gudiyattam hospital in which 561 boxes were distributed. The numbers for other hospitals in the district are: Vaniyambadi (293), Pernambut (125), Ambur (153), Vellore (112), Arcot (65), Sholinghur (106), Kalavai (3), Arakkonam (214) and Natrampalli (80).
A mother M.Ishwarya, wife of a car driver and resident of Kasba, said she had read a lot about this scheme introduced by the Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa and she was thankful to 'Amma' for picking the right items (16 of them including an Ayurvedic preparation) to help mothers and babies.
Another mother-beneficiary, R.Meena said the introduction of the gift box was timely one, and when she was born, her parents were not fortunate enough to such a box. With more and more mothers receiving the gift boxes when they go for delivery to government hospitals, the scheme was getting to be more popular, adds Meena.
