Why Bondmania?
James Bond’s charm and confidence seem to overshadow his sexism
Spy and womaniser are two words that come to mind when one thinks of James Bond. No Bond movie is complete without hot women falling for the smooth talking suave spy.
But what is it that makes James Bond score high with both men and women? As Suhail a DJ at a popular club, in Chennai, puts it “Women want to be with Bond and men want to be like him.”
Despite being an obvious sexist and misogynist, Bond has his share of fans in both sexes. It makes you wonder whether members of both genders identify or find that kind of personality appealing at some level.
Actor Daniel Craig, in an interview recently, called out his most famous character for his solitary lifestyle and outdated views on the opposite sex. “He’s actually a misogynist. A lot of women are drawn to him chiefly because he embodies a certain kind of danger and never sticks around for too long.”
Craig adds that hopefully, his Bond will come across as less sexist and misogynistic compared to the earlier versions.
Natasha a senior brand executive says, “Bond is an alpha male, he plays the dominant role in the movie. He might be a sexist but he is the knight in the shining armour at the end and that's why I love his character.”
“The appeal of Bond is limitless; men love the way he dresses up, walks, talks, his gadgets, etc. I have seen people order drinks the way he does,” adds DJ Suhail.
Actress Isha Talwar says, “Bond is an iconic character and he has been with us for decades. Of course, everyone likes him, no one can say otherwise. He is flamboyant with his cars and gadgets.”
Most women find bad boys appealing and Bond is as badass as they come. Bond is a secret spy, snappy dresser, rides stunning cars, takes risks, hooks up with hot women and beats up the ‘bad guys’. Ian Fleming’s character ticks all the boxes that both men and women find appealing.
