KOZHIKODE: The capital district tops in the number of AIDS cases reported in the state, according to the latest statistics released by the Kerala State AIDS Control Society (KSACS).
The statistics compiled from 2002 till October, 2015 from the data collected from all the government hospitals and private hospitals shows that 5,357 cases have been reported from Thiruvananthapuram alone.
Thrissur is second with 4,602 cases and Kozhikode third with 4,180 cases. High-range districts show the least number of cases reported with Wayanad 247 and Idukki 405 cases.
The total number of cases reported in the state who are HIV positive is 27,604. During the last 13 years, a total of 3,224,651 people were subjected to HIV test in the state.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, KSACS Kozhikode District Supervisor Sadeek Kottakkal said that though the number of cases being reported was decreasing compared to previous years, the rate of incidence among adolescents was higher.
“Awareness campaigns among people are getting a positive response, especially the intervention among the high-risk population like sex workers and drug users,” he said.
A major chunk of AIDS cases were reported among homosexuals and bisexuals. “The chances of infections are six times higher in homosexuals and bisexuals,” he added.
The data reveals that the most number of AIDS cases were being reported from urban areas like Corporations and municipalities.
“Districts like Wayanad and Idukki, which are not much urbanized compare to other districts, have lesser number of cases , despite the fact that they are sharing border with states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka- states with high HIV prevalence,” he added.
