10,000 students from Tamil Nadu attempt CAT

More than 40 centres arranged in state

Chennai: Students across the country took the Common Admission Test (CAT) on Sunday. Around 2.19 lakh candidates appeared for the test all over India. In Tamil Nadu itself over 10,000 candidates appeared for the test. According to an official from TIME institute, there were more than 40 centres in Tamil Nadu and 20 centres in Chennai.

Karan Patira, who took the CAT, said, “We had to manage time. The Data Interpretation Logical Reasoning section (DILR) was tougher than the other two sections, which are Quantitative Aptitude (QA) and Verbal Reading comprehension. Overall, the paper was easy.”

He further added that it was convenient and better conducting the exam on a single day. As all the people attended on the same day so there was a high chance of people who could actually do well getting good marks. If it were conducted on two days it would have been a longer procedure. If one would study well it would be helpful.

“Of the 34 questions in QA, I attempted 29 as I found it easier. But normally others attempted 25 questions. Because there was no negative marking for non-MCQs this time so I just randomly guessed four-five questions not worrying whether it is right or wrong,” he said.

Manisha Jain who is attempting her second CAT this year said last year the test was divided into two sections while this year there were three sections. Last year QA was combined with DILR and Verbal was combined with reading comprehension.

“This year it was more convenient. Last year we did not have calculators but this year we had a calculator and so it was more convenient while doing the calculations. The difficulty level in DILR was more than last year. The rest was easy. Last year there was no Non-MCQ only MCQs were there,” she said.

This time around, para jumbling was there in Non-MCQ. In the Non-MCQ candidates had to write sentences and so it was a bit difficult. “For English we didn't even know what to start with. If we had MCQs we had an idea. So time management was a factor,” she said.
