Speedbreakers in Visakhapatnam are unscientific

Motorists face tough time due to newly built speedbreakers in city

Visakhapatnam: The newly built speed breakers in most parts of Vizag city, particularly on the beach road stretch, have become one of the factors for accidents and are causing health hazards.

As a part of the road repair works, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has put up speed breakers to prevent rash driving by motorists. However, GVMC did not followed the guidelines issued by Indian Road Congress, which make painting speed breakers mandatory. Commuters, unable to identify the humps due to non-painting on them, have been losing control over the vehicles at the humps and fall down from the bikes.

Motorists, who use the beach road stretch for going to Gitam Univer-sity, Sagarnagar, Indira Gandhi Zoological Park and few other places on the way, say that the speed breakers on the beach road stretch are death traps as a majority of the speed breakers are not perfectly made as either the speed breakers are too bumpy or not painted in black and white stripes. They claim that GVMC has not even installed warning boards before the humps. Though Vizag is poised to become a smart city, the unscientific speed breakers clearly reflect the commitment of the local body.

SS Murthy, a businessman and a resident of Sagarnagar, who use the beach road stretch regularly, said: “I have developed backache due to the imperfect speed breakers on city roads as I unable to identify the speed breakers while travelling because of the absence of paint on speed breakers or indicators.”

ACPs (traffic) K Prabhakar and M Srinivas said that the local body has started the road repairs ahead of International Fleet Review (IFR), which will be held in February 2016. But GVMC has failed to rebuild the faulty speed breakers and again building the unscientific humps. “We will inform the locals body to rebuild the faculty speed breakers after identifying such speed breakers at all the areas in the city.”

Due to the absence of mandatory white painting (zebra marking) on the speed breakers and also missing of warning boards before the height speed breakers at Tenneti Park down, Zoo Park, Sagarnagar and few other areas in the city, the motorists has been receiving injuries after their bikes skidded on those speed breakers.
