NSC Bose Road encroachments removed
In the PIL, Ramasamy submitted that the corporation had allowed vendors on the stretch
Chennai: Even as encroachments remained on the congested NSC Bose Road, the Chennai corporation has informed the Madras high court that its earlier order regarding removal of encroachments from the road has been complied with and encroachers were evicted.
The corporation’s zonal officer-V made the submission when a petition filed by ‘Traffic’ Ramasamy came up for hearing before the first bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Puspha Sathyanarayana. The officer filed a detailed affidavit, including photos.
In the PIL, Ramasamy submitted that the corporation had allowed vendors on the stretch. This was against an apex court order. He sought a court directive to the authorities to remove the encroachments.
To make the congested NSC Bose Road pedestrian friendly, on October 13 the court directed the Chennai corporation and traffic police to maintain the stretch as no-hawking zone. The bench directed the corporation commissioner and the additional commissioner of police, Chennai, traffic, to ensure that the area is cleared of all encroachments and is maintained as no hawking zone area. When the matter came up, the zonal officer informed the court that encroachments had been removed.
Hawkers/encroachers on NSC Bose Road formed the Singaravelar Olympic Muthal Broadway Corner Varai Salaiyora Siru Kadai Vyaparigal Nala Sangam. It filed a writ petition last year praying to implement Street Vendors Protection of Livelihood Act. The court had also directed the authorities to implement the law.
Meanwhile, the association has filed a petition to review the October 13 order. Hearing would be held in December. He said based on a Supreme Court order of March 29, 1995, 794 members of Madras City Small Merchants Association. had been relocated in various places.
