Metro plan in Andhra Pradesh faces heat from political honchos

Two TD leaders and an MP have already proposed changes

Vijayawada: Proposals for changing metro rail station locations in various areas, especially on Mahatma Gandhi Road stretch, by political honchos may turn contentious.

According to sources, two legislators and one MP suggested several changes in plan, especially for changing station locations in the Patamata to Poranki stretch.

Already business sections are opposing the metro rail plan on Mahatma Gandhi Road stretch from Pundit Nehru Bus station while they proposed an alternative plan for Bandar canal bund, which is adjacent to the original planned route.

According to sources, two TD legislators suggested three changes for station locations while a MP also directed the metro rail officials to change the station venue. But the recommendations may turn controversial as landowners whose lands are now included for setting up stations are planning to oppose in a big way.

One landowner who belongs to Poranki village on condition of anonymity said that he was collecting the original plans and new proposed changes for submission to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. He said that several influential persons recommended changes.

On the other hand, the business sections of Bandar road are highlighting the Bandar canal bunds as an alternative plan, which is only 500 meters from the original Mahatma Gandhi Road route plan. Moreover, the entrance for metro stations can be provided from Mahatma Gandhi roadside, they recommended.

Already they have approached several prominent politicians but the change of route is under consideration as Bandar canal bunds are adjacent to Mahatma Gandhi Road said a a business owner.
