Give due respect to women, says NCW chief

Commission was creating awareness and is training to girls on safety, she said

Coimbatore: Atrocities against women would decline only when they will be treated equally and given mutual respect, National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Lalithaa Kumaramangalam said on Sautrday.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function, she said the incidents of atrocities against women were on a rise and to keep a check, the Commission was creating awareness and providing training to girls and women.

Stating that there was a need for change in the status of women, she said unless and until women are treated equally and given mutual respect, there is no possibility of decline in the atrocities against them.

Though there were many laws to protect the women, the Commission, which has only recommendatory power, has been approaching and pursuing police department to take action against the culprits, she said.

Incidents of atrocities have been taking place for ages, but have started coming to light very fast after the advent of internet and social networking websites, she said.
