This is the first time gambling activity is triggering murder
Chennai: A BBA graduate and a former call centre employee, who was a gambling addict, was murdered on Thursday night by his friend with whom he had been playing at a recreational club on Rajaji Salai.
This is the first time gambling activity is triggering murder, though there were complaints of scores of families losing everything in gambling dens in the city, which function as recreation clubs.
The deceased, 24-year old Kumar, who hailed from Sidco Nagar and his friend Jagadish had been gambling through the evening on Thursday. Jagadish was working as a salesman in a shop at Purasawalkam and reportedly swindled money from the shop to gamble.
Police maintained that the club, in which the two played, was licensed for recreational purpose and refused to comment on the gambling part. Jagadish reportedly lost Rs 30 lakh during the last 10 days by gambling in the particular club located on Rave area on Rajaji Salai.
Jagadish believed that Kumar was the reason for the loss. Jagadish on Thursday night started accusing Kumar of foul play and got into an argument with him. Both went to the terrace of the building where their argument turned into a fight.
Around 9 pm, Jagadish repeatedly stabbed Kumar with a knife who died on the spot. The accused surrendered at the Pulianthope police station. According to police, Kumar was a bachelor and is survived by his brother and mother. Kumar had been completed his BBA and had worked at a call centre previously but was unemployed for the last three months.
