Barc suggested to set up a bio-methanation plant capable of processing up to 10 tonnes of waste a day

Chennai: The Chennai corporation has commissioned a Rs 1.8 crore bio-methanation plant which will help process waste generated from slaughter houses in the city. After taking flak from the National Green Tribunal for lack of mechanism to process animal waste, the corporation approached Bhabha Atomic Research Centre for help.
Barc suggested that the city, which generates around nine tonnes of animal waste from its three slaughterhouses in Perambur, Villivakkam and Saidapet, set up a bio-methanation plant capable of processing up to 10 tonnes of waste a day.
The institute will now set up a Nisarg-Runa plant modelling it on the facility available at the Deonar abattoir in Mumbai. Nisarg-Runa is a specialist processing facility that can digest almost any biodegradable waste including kitchen waste, paper, grass, gobar and dry leaves per description on Barc website.
