Hyderabad police to get mobile fingerprint scanners

Scanners will help police recognise criminals on spot

Hyderabad: If things go as per plan, Hyderabad police will be just as quick as the Scotland Yard in detecting criminals and fugitives on the roads.

Taking cue from police departments of developed countries including Britain, the city police is going to introduce mobile fingerprint scanners to spot criminals on the spot.

The department has prepared a proposal to acquire the machines and other technical necessities. The scanners will be linked to the state and city database of fingerprints and police can be alerted in seconds if a suspect's prints match a record.

Senior police officials say if the purchasing and technical installments are done as per the plan, officers would be on the roads with the scanners in six months.

When a suspect is caught by the police during vehicle checking or in a cordon and search operation, the current standard operating procedure is that the cops take the person to the police station, take the fingerprint and sent it to the specific department of city wing and CID.

The verification might even take days. However, with the new scanners, the cops can get the fingerprint on the spot and determine if a person is an offender or not.

“We can save several hours of police time by cutting out the escorted journey to police stations to check the identity. Once a person is caught, we can let him off in minutes if he is not a criminal,” a senior police official from Hyderabad said.

The police has two separate databases on criminals’ fingerprints at present. Officials say efforts to integrate those databases will be taken up by creating a single window, with which the mobile fingerprint scanners will be connected. As part of improving policing in the city, higher officials had earlier visited various developed countries to study the best police methods.
