Stylish girls shop for movie stars
They are starting their engineering degrees, finishing their MBAs or setting foot into the world of nine-to-five jobs, but that does not keep Bengaluru’s young from invading a space henceforth occupied only by a select few – the chic universe of stylists. With a world of fashion start-ups in the city offering not only clothing but also some essential sartorial advice to go with it, not only can you get a young style fiend to explain an outfit to you, you can also get a fresher insight thanks to their unique perspective on the styling gig. Slowly triggering a revolution in the world of intelligent dressing, the fashionable young are all set to make the city a more stylish one.
While even a few years ago, stylists were a luxury affordable only by celebrities, with website after website dedicated to fashion, emerging in the city, youngsters have taken to styling as a worthy profession to fuel their love for fashion. Rituja Bakshi, who studied to be an engineer and has styled the likes of Aditi Rao Hydari and Katrina Kaif, is now working in the city with a fashion start-up. She says, “In my second year of engineering college, I realised my love for fashion is something bigger than just doodling designs on my physics copy. In the morning I attended college, in the afternoon I worked and in the evening I prepared for my semesters. Soon after, I styled Raima Sen, Surveen Chawla and a host of others. One thing I have learnt from styling in Bengaluru is, things can be chaotic, they are supposed to be so, but if you are disciplined it will take you far.”
Today, styling has become one of the most receptive career options around. Ritu Arya, who has styled for brands like Nike, Lee and Titan, says, “I graduated from NIFT in textile design but I work as a stylist and design advisor! You don’t need a degree to succeed as a stylist in the city, and that is why people are drawn to it.” While its glamorous draw is enough to interest youngsters, there is a lot of hard work that the profession demands. Daytime corporate and fashion blogger by night, Ankita Shekhar says, “There are days when you need to put in real work and time to keep abreast of what is happening in fashion weeks around the world, and you also have your job to take care of. You cannot be in fashion if you don’t know your tartans from your plaids and that is something that every aspiring stylist should remember.”
