MLC polls: Left pushes for ‘grand alliance’

There are 722 members in the MLC electoral list

Khammam: Telangana Rastra Samiti, which is on cloud nine following its thumping victory in the Warangal LS bypoll, has now shifted focus to winning the MLC election from the Khammam district local bodies constituency. The party has reason to be upbeat about its prospects —the Opposition is divided.

Though the TRS had won four ZPTCs in the local body elections, its strength was increased with ZPTCs, MPTCs and councillors from various parties, including Telugu Desam, Congress, YSR Congress, the CPI and the CPI-M, joining it.

There are 722 members in the MLC electoral list, excluding MLAs and MPs in the Khammam district local body constituency.

During the last 10 days, a number of MPTCs have started joining the ruling party, making the quite difficult to say which MPTC or ZPTC is in which party at a given point of time.

The TRS high command is considering two names for the local bodies, former MLCs Balasani Laxminarayana and K. Chandrasekhar. Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, has evolved a strategy for party to win the MLC seat.

Meanwhile, the Left parties have proposed fielding a common candidate, taking the support of the TD, YSRC and Congress.

Some Left leaders in Khammam district have asked CPI senior leader Puvvada Nageswara Rao to contest as the consensus candidate, but the idea is still under discussion. On the ground, no party is in a position to grab the MLC post directly.
