Kovan musters Opposition support for anti-liquor rally
Chennai: Undeterred by the state moving the Supreme Court challenging his bail, folk singer Kovan on Thursday upped the ante against the ruling AIADMK by meeting DMK president M. Karunanidhi among other Opposition leaders to muster support for his anti-liquor campaign.
Kovan, who had a 15-minute meeting with Karunanidhi at the latter’s Gopalapuram residence, told mediapersons that he had thanked the DMK president for expressing solidarity with him and also sought his party’s support for a massive anti-liquor rally People’s Art and Literary Association (PALA) has planned to hold in the city in the second week of December.
Karunanidhi is understood to have assured maximum support to the rally.
The folk singer, who shot to fame recently following his arrest for the acerbic anti-liquor songs that went viral and got on the nerves of Fort St George so much so that it eventually slapped sedition charges on him, added that he would galvanize support of all parties except the AIADMK and BJP for the anti-liquor campaign.
Later in the day, Kovan also met state Congress president EVKS Elangovan who has been selectively supporting his anti-liquor songs.
Curiously, Karunanidhi’s DMK and Sonia Gandhi’s Indian National Congress were also subjects of the Left leaning singer’s political satires in the past. Kovan also met MDMK leader Vaiko, VCK leader Tirumavalavan and CPI state secretary Mutharasan on Wednesday.
