KOCHI: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court has imposed a ban on begging in and around the precincts of temples including Sabarimala.
A division of the court comprising Justice Thottathil B Radhakrishnan and Anu Sivaraman has issued the order on Thursday while considering the issue of begging in and around the temples.
The court observed that begging will hit the sanctity of the temple besides disturbing the ambience of peace and tranquility. The court observed that menace of begging is practiced in an organised manner in many places.
It has also pointed out that begging increase during the pilgrimage season places like Sabarimala. The court has directed revenue authorities concerned to take the necessary steps immediately to prevent begging in and around temples, especially in major temples such as Sabarimala coming under the Travancore and Cochin Devaswom boards.
The court also prohibited selling of lottery tickets in the precincts of the temples. All the revenue authorities and other officials were directed to take steps to implement order strictly.
