Assocham terms GST as Brahamastra
New Delhi: Calling Goods and Services Tax (GST) as the ‘brahamastra’ to kickstart the Indian economy, industry chamber Assocham’s new president Sunil Kanoria on Thursday urged the opposition parties to set aside their political difference to pass the GST bill in the current session of the Parliament.
“To do business within the states is a nightmare. We may build highways or digital network but we need to create a tax structure whereby goods can flow within states smoothly. GST will unify the country as one,” said Mr Kanoria.
He said that the chamber is writing to members of Parliament and trying to each to them on one-to-one basis over GST. Mr Kanoria asked all political parties to go beyond their political differences and look at India’s development.
“GST is a key ‘brahmastra’ for our GDP. Lawmakers across parties should pass the Constitutional Amendment Bill on GST without further delay. This would send a strong signal to investors that India's economy can overcome serious global challenges with political will,” said Assocham president.
However, he urged that GST should be passed in its “pure form.” Mr Kanoria said that if GST Bill is distorted in a manner that it loses its importance and value than it is better that it does not come. To a question over the need for a continuous dialogue between Prime Minister and the industry, Mr Kanoria said Assocham sends its suggestions to the government on all relevant issues.
