Warangal bypoll result: Congress comes up with excuses

Mr Shabbir Ali’s words were echoed by TPCC working president Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka

Hyderabad: TS Congress leaders on Wednesday started finding excuses for failing to meet their own expectations in the Warangal bypoll where the party candidate lost his deposit.

While Leader of Opposition in the Assembly K. Jana Reddy said that the Congress will never get disturbed just because it lost an election or elated with a victory, but will always try to analyse the poll result and take corrective steps, Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Shabbir Ali blamed the “hidden fear that prevails among voters that the welfare schemes would be discontinued” if the TRS lost the bypoll.

Mr Jana Reddy said he was prepared to join the TRS or campaign for the party in the next elections if the government was able to supply irrigation waters for two crops in Khammam, Warangal and Nalgonda districts as promised by the CM.

Mr Shabbir Ali said that the TRS cadre, at the ground-level, had made veiled threats that the state government would stop pensions, deny 2-bedroom houses and discontinue other welfare schemes if the ruling party’s candidate P. Dayakar lost.

“While the TRS strategy of blackmail worked, we failed to allay those fears despite receiving specific complaints during campaigning. Therefore, instead of deciding to teach TRS a lesson, Warangal voters decided to give it another chance,” he said.

Mr Shabbir Ali’s words were echoed by TPCC working president Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka. Reacting to KCR’S objection to criticism by the Opposition, Mr Shabbir Ali said that the Opposition leaders were quite willing to give constructive suggestions, but except for addressing press conferences, they have no other means to convey their message.

“How do you expect us to give suggestions when you never convened all-party meetings on major issues,” he asked.
