Vijayawada: Besant Road to be made pedestrian friendly soon

Officials chalked out plans to renovate the public properties

Vijayawada: With two metro rail stations coming up on either sides, the city’s busy Besant Road is going to become the most happening place in future.

To cater to the needs of the public, particularly pedestrians, the VMC authorities, with the help of UK’s urban designers, is planning to make Besant Road a ‘model pedestrian’ road. Officials chalked out plans to renovate the public properties of VMC on the Besant Road soon as part of the project.

VMC commissioner Mr G. Veerapandian, along with urban designers, inspected Besant Road on Wednesday and asked them to come up with necessary plans and proposals to make the road pedestrian-friendly.

Mr Veerapandian said that at Eluru Road and MG Road, where both the ends of Besant Road intersect, metro rail stations would come up and the road would become a major path for pedestrians. He said Besant Road should fill the gap between the two stations effectively.

Officials who visited Govindaraju Complex, VHR Ansari Park and Fish Market on the Besant Road stressed the need for renovating them.

Mr Veerapandian also asked officials to ensure that electricity poles and other cables passing through the middle of road are removed and put underground to avoid problems. Additional co-mmissioner P. Arun Ba-bu, chief engineer M.A. Shukoor, chief medical officer Dr M. Gopa Naya, city planner Pradeek Kumar, EE Dhanunjay and others were present.
