Road rule violations turn fatal for many on Outer Ring Road
Hyderabad: With 36 fatal accidents reported till October, ORR, Hyderabad’s high-speed corridor, is one of the deadliest roads despite stringent traffic rules. More than 250 violations are reported in a single week whenever the police conduct special drives. Most violations are for dangerous driving and lane violations. Drivers using exit points to enter the ORR is also a major violation.
According to senior traffic police officials, most accidents on the ORR are fatal. “It is mainly due to the speed; during crashes, the damages are heavy and injuries grievous,” a senior cop said. Another reason that most ORR accidents are fatal is that there are few chances of victims getting help from passersby. “The major reason is reluctance of passersby to help mishap victims, and the distance to super specialty hospitals from the accident spot,” said the official.
According to a survey conducted for Save Life Foundation among 1,027 road-users in Hyderabad and other cities in India, 74 per cent of bystanders and passersby are not ready to help a seriously injured accident victim. Earlier Cyberabad police commissioner C.V. Anand had issued rules for commuters on ORR. Special patrolling teams had also been introduced but the manpower was not enough to cover the entire stretch every day.
“When we conducted a special drive, in just a week, there were 250 violations. Among them, 195 were related to wrong side driving, lane violations, entry from the wrong side, dangerous driving etc.,” said a senior official from Cyberabad traffic police.
