Cooking gas supply hit due to waterlogging
Waterlogging, the main reason
Chennai: This monsoon season has made the wait for a gas cylinder a long ordeal for households in the city. Across Chennai, there have been extensive delays and even some cancellations as gas agencies struggled to deliver cylinders at the doorstep due to waterlogging and shortage of supply.
Private gas dealers in the city delayed 70 per cent of the orders indefinitely for the past 10 days and certain orders were cancelled due to waterlogging on the outskirts and unavailability of labourers for door delivery of cylinders.
“I ordered the cylinder three weeks back and it was supposed to reach my house on November 13, which has still not happened. When I enquired, they informed me that there was no vehicle and workers because of the continuous rain at that time,” said T. Varghese, a security employee in a government institution at Taramani.
A gas dealer maintained that between November 12 and 22, nearly 25,000 cylinder delivery orders were delayed due to waterlogging and unavailability of workers at the godowns. “The main challenge we faced was transportation of the cylinders from our godown at Gummidipoondi to 43 shops in the city during the past two weeks. However, to most of our customers we had promised them that we will deliver the cylinder once the waterlogging is over. From Tuesday afternoon, however, most of our vehicles started moving from our godowns,” said, T. Pandian, a private dealer based at Ashok Nagar for the past nine years.
“In places like Adyar, Velachery, Taramani, Mylapore and certain areas of North Chennai we also had to cancel the orders.” He, however, agreed that it was for the first time that there was such a big delay.
